Cultural Appropriation In The Eras of Segregation & Slavery

During times of slavery and segregation cultural appropriation was commonly used as a comedic way to make fun of and portray African-Americans. Actors would cover their skin with black makeup and it would be referred to as Blackface. Blackface was commonly used in plays and films, a popular one being the 1915 film, "The Birth of a Nation." In the film black renegade, Gus is portrayed by white actor, Walter Long. The use of this racist material prompted the revival of the Ku Klux Klan, a group of people that has been encouraging racism, since the late 1800s. Practices of this kind has helped to spread racism across the nation.
