What is the difference of appropriation and appreciation? Is it as simple as giving credit to the creator or does it involve more? According to The Discussion We Need to Have: Cultural Appropriation vs. Cultural Appreciation, the author mentions Coldplay's Hymn for the Weekend and how Beyoncé "...wore elaborate head jewelry and her hands were painted with henna." Many people say this is an example of cultural appropriation, but bindis and henna are not solely unique in India. Examples of these forehead markings and body paint are visible in South Asia, the Middle East, Persia, Egypt as well as Swahili speaking countries. Cultural appropriation is actually the exaggeration and embellishment of a certain country's culture and making it unrealistic. Bringing up Coldplay's video once again, the author said the real appropriation is "...the use of South Asian poverty as a creative playground was problematic. ...slum children being used as props for the sake of an exotic video."
