Cultural Appropriation: Taylor Swift's Wildest Dreams

In 2015 Taylor Swift released the music video to her fifth single, Wildest Dreams which was set in Africa. The video is based on two white actors who fall in love while filming a movie, but despite parts being filmed in Tanzania the video featured no people of color. Having a video set in Africa and including solely white people makes a video appear to be whitewashed. This video received a very critical response due to it's lack of diversity, but some tried to justify this video by stating it was produced by an African-American woman named Jil Hardin.
This video showcased the times of white colonization in Africa and some took offense that this time period was being romanticized. Colonization in Africa was a brutal time for many Africans and that idea was clearly dismissed in this video.

  1. I like the way you tie in culture to events that are normal. this makes me really think about what our world is like today. Keep up the good work :)
